    ZONE THERAPY   USA

ZONE THERAPY is a precise physical therapy applied as pressure to zones of the feet. This encourages the body's natural healing capability by normalizing blood circulation, hormone production and circulation, lymph circulation, digestion, assimilation, elimination and the function of the autonomic nervous system. It is based on the knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology, immune-biology and disease pathology.

Dr. Charles Ersdal, M.D. MA of Kristiansand, Norway, the originator and developer of this technique brought it to the U.S. in 1989. Dr. Ersdal was restored to his feet from partial paralysis with reflexology techniques. He found that not all who tried reflexology achieved beneficial results. In 1969, he began scientific research and determined that the body contains it's own innate healing intelligence which is stimulated through hand applied pressure to the feet. He discovered that the body would consistently respond as a dynamically interrelated whole rather than as separate symptomatic parts. During research no medicines, remedies or other therapies were employed and a 95% success rate was experienced. This research continues after his death to involve detailed and extensive documentation on thousands of case histories.

This unique system has been in the feet since the beginning. More than 5000 years ago zone therapy was used as a healing method in China and India. Ancient paintings and hieroglyphics in Egypt depict Papayrus picturethe use of this method. Records of this therapy were found in the Incan ruins in Peru, South America. It is believed the Incas were skilled in this method of body care. Cellini from Florence, Italy in the 16th century was known to use hand-applied pressure to fingers and toes to remove pain from different parts of the body.

Dr. William Fitzgerald, an American nose and throat specialist (1872-1946) uncovered the Chinese method and documented to the medical community ten longitudinal zones in the body with connections to face, hands and feet. He pointed out the fact that pressure on zones of the feet and hands brought about normal physiological functioning in the zone being treated. In 1916, Dr. Edwin F. Browers published a report on Dr. Fitzgerald's findings, using the term Zone Therapy.

Another American, Eunice Ingham, studied zone therapy under Dr. Joseph S. Riley, a student of Fitzgerald's.  Thinking she was working with nerve reflexes in the feet, she developed "reflexology" which she described in her books Stories Feet Can Tell and Stories Feet Have Told, published in 1938. Her books and method spread to Europe, arriving in Denmark by the middle of this century. Hanne Marquart of Germany also began to develop these concepts but it grew internationally when Dr. Ersdal began his research. Zone Therapy has been found to be a signal or electro-magnetic system rather than a reflex system and treats the body holistically rather than symptomatically.

The treatment is administered by the hands of a certified therapist to trigger signal points on the feet in a specific and precise pattern.

When a signal point is triggered within the ZONE THERAPY treatment, a message goes to the organ or tissue affected, through a "reflex arc" to the spinal cord and then to the brain. Discomfort is experienced in areas of imbalance. The autonomic nervous system has two actions, either sympathetic (stimulating) or parasympathetic (contracting). One of these actions is needed to cause change in the body. When significant change has occurred, discomfort is no longer experienced. Progress may be precisely monitored in this way. Health is restored through stimulation and support of the ENTIRE body. This treatment encourages the body to redirect, restore and balance all functions for optimum energy and health.

A treatment session is on average 45 minutes to one hour. Five sessions over a two-month period are recommended to detoxify and establish the body's restorative process. After this initial treatment schedule, an interval of two weeks to three months is recommended depending on individual need. To reach a true state of health, all conditions of imbalance must be found and reversed.  Once this is achieved, two to four treatments yearly will maintain health. This is truly holistic health care.
